New Page Added To The Site & Articles Published.

Hi All,

Just to let you know that since I have returned from my holiday in Scotland I have added some more content to the site and have published a couple of articles for those of you who are not beginners. The articles are in the series "The Basics of Plant Growth". The first one deals with plant hormones and the second with plant energy. I am currently working on a page about inducing flowering in plants and will also publish an article about the subject.

My latest experiment is germination of a variety of seeds and clones using a home made automatic tray. This is based on a smartvalve from AutoPot and a plastic tray from the local garden center. I will let you know how I get on with it.

Are You Prepared For A Hard Drive Crash?

Its just a matter of time before you experience a hard drive problem.

Are you prepared to loose your data?

If your hard drive crashed right now do you have an action plan to follow?

Most people only think of backing up their data after they experience a problem. Don't set yourself up for a data loss disaster.

Your data integrity action plan should consist of the following:
1) How often you will back up your data
2) What data you will back up
3) What back up procedure you will use

How often you back up your data can only be determined by how important you feel it is.
Answer this question "If my hard drive crashed right now, I would be alright if I had the data from at least (time) ago".
Of course you would want everything but if you could have the data from 1 month, or 6 months ago would that be sufficient?

Whatever time is sufficient mark it on your calendar both a hard copy and set up a meeting on your PC to remind you.

You change your smoke detector batteries when you turn your clock back and when you turn it ahead right? Well back up your data then too.If you don't change your clocks then pick some holidays or special dates that happen close to the timeframe you want to back up your data so you won't forget.

What data you back up depends on how you use your PC. Some of the key directories, if you are using Windows, are the My Documents, Favorites and Desktop directories.

Remember if you are using multiple profiles on your PC then the three directories above can be different for each profile and each one would need to be backed up.

You will also want to include your email data. Don't forget to write down the email accounts you have. You should also write down any username and passwords so they are not lost.

You should look at every directory to see if it has information that you would need.Make a list of all the software programs you are using.

If you have the physical CDs put them all together in a safe location.Don't forget the CDs for your peripherals like your scanner, digital camera, PDA etc… Collecting these CDs may remind you of additional data that you need to back up.

If you are running software that you installed from downloaded files, burn them to a CD-R and add it to your collection. If you use a CD-R or DVD-R you can update it as you download and install new applications.

What procedure you use to back up your data can be determined by the amount of data you want to back up. Your data might fit onto a CD or DVD in which case you just need to burn it and you're done.If it spans multiple DVDs then you might want to consider getting a second hard drive to copy your data onto.

If you are not comfortable with adding a second internal hard drive or you are using a laptop then you can purchase an external hard drive to back up your data.

The information you have on your hard drive could disappear in a flash. If you don't want to spend up to $3,000 to have a data recovery company retrieve what information they can from your hard drive, then take a few minutes right now and create your back up action plan.

If you ever have a data emergency your action plan will be your insurance policy. If you adhere to it, your valuable data will adhere to you!

Hydroponic Rice Crop

Hi All,
An interesting article appeared in The Times on Thursday 12th january. It appears that the Japanese have perfected the art of growing rice without paddy fields. An experimental lab, set up in an old security vault, has finally produced the goods after many years of trials and mainly errors.

The breakthrough came when an old rice farmer, with 40 years experience, was asked to look at the crops which kept failing. His immediate reaction was that there was "no wind and no rain".
On installing fans and raising the Oxygen Levels in the nutrient to simulate rain the plants thrived.

Hi All,
check out the new pages on the website. I am slowly getting the site a bit more organised and hope to improve both the content and the layout over the coming months.
Members comments would be welcomed either in praise or critical (provided that they are constructive).

I have just picked the last of my crop of tomatoes. These were grown from seed, outdoors in England, using 3 medium sized flower pots that were hand watered daily and 1 Autopot. The results have been just amazing.

As a control my wife grew about the same number of seedlings in 2 growbags. These produced about a third of the crop that the hydro ones gave. Their season was shorter by about 4 to 5 weeks and there was a lot more loss to slugs, snails etc as well as some rain damage.

The only slight problem I had with the Hydro was that the Autopot filled up with water from the plant pot every time we had heavy rain. All I did was suck it out with a large syringe and squirt it on the garden. The veggies and flowers seemed to thrive in that area.

The last of the tomatoes have begun to get damaged by the cold and wet so I have abandoned them. I am, however, well impressed by fresh tomatoes, with lots of flavour, outside until almost November. Maybe this global warming is coming to the UK and we are in for some decent weather for a change. Somehow I doubt it!

Hi All,
I just thought that I would like to wish all you Dads out there a very special Fathers Day and issue you with a challenge. I know what a diference having children makes to ones life. My two boys are now grown men with children of their own, but they both still try to see me on Fathers Day and bring presents. The best present of all is the knowledge that they care and want to show their love for me in a tangible way.

We English are a strangely reticent race when it comes to showing our feelings, but nevertheless we do love and respect those close to us even if we don't say so. So my challenge to you is just to tell your nearest and dearest that you love them.

Hello and welcome to the Hydroponics Gardening Information Blog.

A visit to our homepage will reveal a series of navigation bars running down the left margin of the page.

If you click on the first one you will be taken to the hydroponics intro page, where you will find basic information about hydroponics. The next page is systems which deals with the various container based hydroponic methods. Environment covers growing conditions and leads to nutrient manufacturers, miscellaneous and climate, a page about control equipment.

Lighting illuminates the varied array of grow lights, ballasts and reflectors on offer, while Grow mediums and nutrients explain your choices of substrate and food.

Growth enhancers and propagation lead you through the difficult first stages of growing from seed and cuttings and on to boosting the plant foods efficiency.

Pest control is geared towards natural living predators as pest eradicators.

Container garden is a page devoted to growing in containers in order to use otherwise unusable spaces around the house. Following on we find Smartvalve and Autopot SmartTray, which introduce you to the Autopot range of equipment.

Articles, Hydroponics Club, site map and resources are all self-explanatory, the latter showing the sites links to other places of interest. The Blog page of course returns you to this Blog.
